Biographical Information

Dave Tilton

My passion for creating art took hold in my early teens when my drawing and mixed media work won awards in national student-art competition. My creative interests shifted to photography during my twenties and my photographs were sold nationally.

Travel, another passion, sparked an interest in the geological and cultural forces that shape our landscapes and led to my formal studies in geography and cartography at the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee. Through these studies, I was introduced to interactive media and information design—the foundation for my work on numerous academic projects and commercial projects that received some of the highest awards in the industry such as a New Media Invision Award, PC Magazine's Top Ten CD of the Year award and inclusion in Graphis I: A Compiliation of New Media Design (NY: Graphis Inc.).

Having lived in Wisconsin for many years, in 2012, I traded the prairies and lakes of Dane County for the bays, lakes, and woodlands of northern Door County.

Ambient – New Landscapes

am • bi • ent | ‘ambe.nt |

adjective [ attrib. ]
of or relating to the immediate surroundings of something: the liquid is stored at below ambient temperature.

noun (also ambient music)
a style of instrumental music with electronic textures and no persistent beat, used to create or enhance a mood or atmosphere.

ORIGIN late 16th cent.: from French ambiant or Latin ambient - “going around,” from ambire.

Inspired by a genre of music that emphasizes mood and atmosphere, the landscapes included in Ambient explore the notion of “surrounding.” This exploration ambles a bit, sometimes prodding the interplay between a thing and its surroundings, sometimes recognizing surroundings as a place in time, sometimes understanding place in terms of feel and mood. Ambient features over 25 new works that look closely at our surroundings and transform what is seen into images of contemplation and beauty.

All of the work in Ambient was created entirely in a digital environment. I choose to work in this environment because I believe there is a deep connection between what we see and what we hear. In the digital world, light and sound are both represented by 1s and 0s. The difference between them lies in how these 1s and 0s are manipulated and expressed. The digital medium allows me to consider how sound is synthesized
into music and to re-conceptualize that process in order to transform light into art.
