Christine Echtner Growing up in a family of artists I have been looking at and making art since I can remember. My maternal grandmother was especially influential in introducing me to mixed media and sparked my interest in combining materials. She taught me to see the creative possibilities in almost everything. My process starts with my cache of quick sketches of ideas, situations and compositions. With the hint of a story: a guy on a ladder, his figure cropped off the top of the canvas; people mingling (or not) at a cocktail reception and an idea of the materials I would like to incorporate, I'm ready to begin. I start with the drawing on the canvas, usually vine charcoal, and layer on paint, newsprint, fabric and anything else that strikes me. I love the immediacy of painting and the evidence of process that goes into making the piece. I enjoy seeing the painting take form. Humor and social satire both playa role in my work. I prefer to take a good-humored approach to my art and subject matter , holding up the mirror in a lighthearted way. Line, texture, composition, color, textiles, humor and humans are my inspiration.
